The Gerin family has been established in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie vineyard, in the village of Ampuis, for 6 generations. This vineyard, located 30km south of Lyon, is the northernmost appellation of the Rhône Valley and also one of the smallest, covering only about 320Ha.
The influence of the Mediterranean and continental climates produces wines that are tannic, powerful, silky and elegant. The king grape variety, Syrah is sometimes blended with Viognier to bring more finesse to the wines.
The story begins with the purchase of a parcel of land in Côte-Rôtie, symbolizing the creation of Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin, created in 1983. It is then in 1987 that the first bottle is born, thanks to the resumption of the family exploitation (the vineyards of Marcel Gerin and Alfred Gerin, grandfather and father).
It continued then in 1988, with the first separate vinification of the plot, Les Grandes Places, followed in 1996 by the famous La Landonne. In the early 1990’s, the construction of a vat room and a barrel cellar became necessary and the bottle storage was built in 2000.
In 2003, the vineyard of La Viallière, on the lands of Côte-Rôtie, began. A titanic work on slopes ranging from 40% to almost 60%. The 2009 vintage will finally see the expression of the first bottles. The decision was made to convert to organic farming in 2020. A new challenge that the domain is taking on.
