The domaine was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small village in the heart of the Cote Rotie appellation. Vines have grown there for 2,400 years. Etienne was 14 years old in 1924 when he settled in the region and he vinified 67 harvests in Cote Rotie, also creating the Vidal-Fleury negociant business along the way.
In 1961, Marcel Guigal took the reins of the Maison Guigal. His wife Bernadette joined him in 1973 and their son Philippe was born in 1975. Philippe is the oenologist of the house today, representing the third generation of the family to run the Maison.
1995 saw the acquisition of the famous Château d'Ampuis, a historical and oenological landmark on the Rhone, whose long history is directly linked to the Côte-Rôtie appellation. More acquisitions in 2001 with domaine Jean-Louis grippat and Domaine de Vallouit continued to expand the family portfolio in Cote Rotie but also Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.
In 2003, the family decided to add their own cooperage in the Chateau d’Ampuis.
Domaine de Bonserine is purchased in 2006, and Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017, marking an important move to the Southern Rhône.
